 This year marks the 13th year since I
created Hygeia and the Hygeia Foundation, Inc. The idea came from my desire to share with
others the poetry of loss and hope which I
have been writing for my patients. This began, as many projects do, as a need to fulfill a
personal mission. Soon after programming the website and placing it online-at a time
when the the Internet was not too well utilized or even understood, I started receiving
emails from families who had incurred pregnancy losses sending me their stories and their
poems which I promptly posted online for others to share. This grew rapidly into the
primary feature of Hygeia. At the time, it was one of only a few programs dedicated
to pregnancy and neonatal loss where messages could be posted and Hygeia still remains the
only program which is totally edited, managed and sponsored by a
physician(Obstetrician/Gynecologist) who cares for these losses with patients. To date,
Hygeia has over 30,000 members who have registered in the database-all who have
experienced pregnancy loss, neonatal death and newborn illnesses, who are trying to
conceive after a loss or who have had successful pregnancies after a loss. There are
thousands of posted stories to read and to share.Much has changed in medicine and on the Internet since the inception of Hygeia, but its founding mission remains strong and is being fulfilled. Our Parent Board has worked tirelessly to help advance the programs of the Hygeia Foundation. Through selfless dedication and committment to provide support for families who have experienced Pregnancy and Neonatal Loss, a sucessful, peer-led local support network in Southern Connecticut has been formed and is functioning at three sites. Rachel, our Director of Programs has worked tirelessly to organize our support group schedules and help provide support to local families. At this time, I would like to thank all those who have participated in Hygeia as members, visitors, board members, supporters and friends, and also let you know that Hygeia is healthy and moving ahead to implement its programs, locally and through the Internet, always cognizant of its roots.
